Old Versus New: a Comparison of Two Fancy Flavors Ice Cream Trucks

Up until now, all my LEGO builds have been made with bricks that are fairly new. In fact, my oldest LEGO pieces are probably only six or seven years old. That's why I decided to do this post, a direct comparison of LEGO from 1989 and before, and LEGO from between 2014 to right now.

I did this comparison by building one of my most iconic posts - Fancy Flavors Ice Cream Truck, the first Create Sparkle post - entirely out of LEGO from pieces that are at least 33 years old.
I tried to make the models as similar as possible, using the same overall shape, and starting with the same sized base platform. And while the results turned out much more similar than I would have guessed, there are still some major differences!
The first big different is that, back in 1989, LEGO didn't have very many smooth pieces, and so I had to make the roof using studs. I also didn't have any good ice cream cone pieces (you can look in and see my "ice cream" which is mostly made out of small circle and 1x1 square bricks), so I couldn't make the sign hanging above the store. But the biggest difference that I can see is the color scheme. While the 2021 Fancy Flavors Ice Cream Truck has lots of nice, pastel colors that make it a super cute, cartoon-ish ice cream truck, the 1989 truck is more rigid, with bright primary colors that pop out, and lots of rough edges!
Still, both ice cream trucks do reflect each other, and are similar enough, that if they both tried to sell ice cream on the same streets they would end up being ice cream selling partners - or rivals!
